The ‘me’ Gospel

I was visiting a relative’s church this past Easter and one of the bullet points during the sermon was “The resurrection is a ‘me’ thing” stating that we need to focus on how Jesus died for our salvation (emphasis on our). Salvation may be a big deal in the Bible, but there is no way that we are the center of the story!

If you take a broad look at the focus of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, and sum up in one sentence what it is about… It is impossible to say that it is about me! Yes, we are in there, but we are not the main character. we are barely a supporting role and more often are just stage props to the true center, Jesus.

God’s rulership is established with creation and we rebel. At every encounter that we have with Him throughout the Old Testament we respond with rebellion. Even through the New Testament and up until today, we are not the main character of the salvation story, we are the antagonist. We are the man in black, the evil mastermind that gets thwarted at every turn. And even though we continually refuse to acknowledge His rightful claim to us as His creation, he still gave His life so that we could be reconciled to Him. THAT is the story of salvation!
